Web Guidebook: Web Page Policy

World Wide Web pages are among the most effective means of communicating information--both on campus and to the vast community of Internet users. While everyone on campus is encouraged to make use of the web, there are a few guidelines to keep in mind.

Campus web pages must:

  • conform to college policies, ethical codes, rules, and regulations.
  • observe copyright and licensing laws, as well as the acceptable practices related to those laws. All reproduced copyrighted material, for example, must have prior written permission of the copyright holder.
  • Be affiliated with the college or have an approved sponsor.
  • Designate an organization or individual who will be accountable for the page's content.

In addition, administrative pages must:

  • present information that furthers the college's mission or serves the larger campus community.
  • provide up-to-date, accurate information.
  • refrain from publishing confidential or sensitive information.

Types of pages

Departmental pages are created and maintained by either academic or administrative departments to explain their programs and activities. They are subject to review by the college's webmaster and/or web committee. Department heads are responsible for the upkeep and accuracy of their pages.

Personal pages are created and maintained by students, faculty or staff members, and those individuals are responsible for their pages. Personal web pages offer members of the campus community the opportunity to present themselves and their views to the public. They are not official representations of the college, nor do they represent the views or opinions of the college.

While the college advocates freedom of speech and academic freedom, it reserves the right to remove any information or links to information that violates any of the college's policies. The college may also choose to prohibit sites or activities that threaten network security or may cause the college to incur costs.

Web pages are subject to review by the web committee for compliance with guidelines and policies.

Acceptable Use

Web pages using the college's computers, Internet connection or address may be used for instructional, research, or public service purposes only. For-profit enterprises are not allowed. For more detailed information on acceptable use, consult the Information Technology website.
