Upward Bound: General Information
Upward Bound is a year-round, college preparatory program (TRIO)
funded by the Department of Education and sponsored by Fitchburg
State College since 1989. The program stresses academic development,
serving 67 high school students in Fitchburg and Leominster for
the duration of their high school career and beyond. Eligibility
is based on first generation college status, family income, and
academic motivation.
Upward Bound’s school year program provides academic support
for students through tutoring services, educational and college
preparatory workshops, and cultural field trips. Program participants
have access to many of the college’s resources and facilities.
Each summer, Upward Bound students take part in a 6-week residential
program. Students live on campus Monday through Friday at Fitchburg
State College and take academic courses to better prepare them for
college. In addition, students volunteer at community work sites
and participate in a variety of recreational and cultural activities.
Admission to the Upward Bound Program is on a rolling basis, dependent
on openings. For more information, students can contact their school
guidance counselor or the Upward Bound program at Fitchburg State
College (978-665-3439). The Upward Bound staff is happy to meet
students and their parent/guardian at school, a community location,
or Fitchburg State College.
