Fitchburg State College has implemented a student laptop requirement for incoming freshmen and freshmen transfers. (Please check with your department for discipline-specific needs.) All FSC students are eligible to participate in this purchase program.
Purchasing computers outside of the laptop program is not recommended. The negotiated purchase prices that FSC has secured, which are significantly below open market prices, include not only the appropriate operating system (with pre-configured FSC settings), virus protection, and anti-spyware software, but -- pre-loaded on the Hewlett Packards only -- also the Microsoft Office suite. Students who purchase laptops through the Laptop Initiative Program receive the CompleteCare warranty. This covers parts, labor, and replacement costs for all hardware should the unit malfunction for any reason. Students simply need to bring the laptop into the Help Desk and we will process the warranty claim. For student equipment purchased outside of our program, the Help Desk will assist in diagnosing computer issues and may recommend a solution or an outside vendor to resolve problems. The Help Desk instructs students to follow-up directly with the manufacturer for warranty issues, as the FSC Help Desk would not want to void the warranty by performing any work beyond basic diagnostics. The Help Desk reserves priority support for Program participants, and addresses non-participants on a first come, first serve basis. Additionally, the loaner laptop program is only available to Program participants.
For more information about support issues please contact the "laptop depot" of the Information Technology Help Desk at (978) 665-4500 or helpdesk@fsc.edu, or visit the Help Desk in the Conlon Building.
