Sustainability: Climate Commitment
The American College and University Climate Commitment
The Presidents Climate Commitment, signed by nearly 600 college presidents and chancellors, puts Fitchburg State College into a leadership position in the long range fight against global warming. This document commits colleges and universities to model ways of eliminating global warming, and educating both students and the community.
The Sustainability Advisory Committee at Fitchburg State, comprised of students, faculty, and staff, is charged with creating institutional structures to guide development and implementation of the college’s plan to achieve climate neutrality. A working group from this committee, along with selected others from the campus community, will develop an institutional plan for becoming climate neutral.
The Greenlines study, first conducted in fiscal year 2007 provides the college with a base line of its current carbon footprint. This study will be used to identify action areas and benchmarks to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
Each signatory institution is required to initiate at least two tangible actions to achieve climate neutrality. Fitchburg State College already has actions in effect.
- As part of the Massachusetts Ride Share regulations, Fitchburg State College provides access to public transportation. In addition to transit passes and access to public transportation, the college provides carpool and vanpool matching.
