Fitchburg State College is taking a leadership role in working towards climate neutrality by developing and employing sustainable policies and practices. Our work throughout the campus carries into the community.
Guided by the Presidents Climate Commitment and Massachusetts Executive Order #484, Fitchburg State College is setting benchmarks and taking concrete steps to reduce the carbon footprint of the institution. Students, staff, and faculty are all a part of the effort.
Campus-wide recycling, green construction, building modernization, and closer monitoring of energy usage are all important parts of achieving the goal of climate neutrality.

The Sustainability Advisory Committee is charged with creating institutional structures to guide and develop Fitchburg State College’s plan to achieve climate neutrality. Members include students, staff, and faculty.
- President's Climate Commitment
President Antonucci signed the Presidents Climate Commitment in 2007, making Fitchburg State College an institutional leader in the ongoing efforts to become more climate friendly. As part of the commitment, FSC completed its first Green House Gas Emissions assesment.
- Leading by Example- The Environmental Policy of the Commonwealth of Massachusets
Fitchburg State College has stepped up to the plate, promoting energy efficiency and sustainability on and off campus. Massachusetts Governor Deval Patrick challenged state agencies to lead communities in becoming greener in Executive Order No. 484, Leading-By-Example, issued in 2007.
- Recycling at FSC
Recycling is an important part of reducing our carbon footprint as called for in the Presidents Climate Commitment. Fitchburg State College has implemented a campus-wide single stream recycling program. It’s recycling made easy.
- Sustainability Events on Campus
Increased reliance on high technology challenges consumers when attempting to reduce electricity consumption. In February 2007 Fitchburg State College students proved it could be done.
- Energy Efficient Construction
With pioneering green designs and innovative energy saving features, Fitchburg State College is seeking LEED silver certification for the newest residince hall at Mara Village. Inside and outside, and in blending with the existing structures, the new dorm, scheduled to open in Fall 2009 exemplifies the college’s vision of the future.
