Athletics - Kimberly Bresnahan - 2002 Inductee - Graduated
1989
At Fitchburg State College, both the men’s and the women’s
cross country and track and field programs have a long history of
outstanding performances. Only one athlete has earned All-American
status in cross country. That athlete is Kim Bresnahan.
Bresnahan burst onto the college running scene and remained a fixture
at the top for four years in both cross country and track and field.
In cross country she was the only female athlete to win three consecutive
(1986-1988) Massachusetts State College Athletic Conference (MASCAC)
individual championships. She helped lead the Falcons to a MASCAC
team title all three seasons. Her 1986 championship began a string
of five consecutive times an FSC runner took home the MASCAC title
while Fitchburg was the host school for the championship (1986,
1989, 1992, 1995 and 1998). Bresnahan’s crowning moment as
a cross country runner came in 1987 when she earned All-American
honors following her outstanding performance at the NCAA National
Championship Meet. Bresnahan continued an outstanding cross country
career in 1988 when she qualified for the national meet for a second
straight year.
When the fall ended each season, Bresnahan headed from the courses
of cross country to the Elliot Field track. For Bresnahan, the honors
and titles continued to pour in. She became FSC’s school record
holder in two events. Her time of 10:24.99 became the school standard
in the 3,000 meter run while she set the school mark in the 5,000
meter run with a time of 17:43.78. She was a two-time event qualifier
for the NCAA National Championship meet. Although there were not
enough MASCAC teams to crown a league team champion during Bresnahan’s
tenure, she and her teammates help set the groundwork for six consecutive
MASCAC team titles beginning in 1991.
