Athletics: James Hammond - 1994 Inductee - Graduated 1934
James Hammond, who graduated in 1934, played soccer for four years
and basketball for three years during his Fitchburg Teacher's College
days. Not only did Hammond star for the soccer team, he served as
coach for all four seasons. He is credited with leading a group
of inexperienced player to winning seasons in both 1931 and 1932.
He was a star forward throughout his career. In basketball Hammond
played with equal success as a starting guard for three years. His
junior and senior seasons were two of FSC's finest ever, with the
squad finishing 12-2 and 11-3, respectively. In 1932-33 FTC won
the Arthur Harrington Award as the NETCC Champions.
Hammond's career in serving Massachusetts Higher Education remains
one of the finest in the state's history. After teaching at FTC
for numerous years, Hammond became the college's president in 1963,
a post he held until retiring in 1975. He passed away in December
of 1997.
