The Fitchburg State College Athletic Department announced the hiring of head football coach Paul McGonagle today.

McGonagle comes to Fitchburg State after spending the last two seasons as the offensive coordinator at Bentley College. McGonagle helped the Hawks to their first-ever Northeast 10 Conference Championship and NCAA Division II playoff berth.

“Paul brings to the position exactly the combination of leadership, knowledge and enthusiasm that we look for in a coach,” said Fitchburg State President Robert V. Antonucci. “His character and work ethic are immediately evident, as is his extensive understanding of the game. I have no doubt that he will craft our program in a manner that mirrors Fitchburg State – a winning, first-class institution that engenders respect and is recognized for integrity and excellence.”

Prior to Bentley, McGonagle was the offensive coordinator at Stony Brook Universitywhere the Seawolves captured their first Northeast Conference Championship. The 31-year old Reading, Massachusetts native began his coaching career at Northeastern University and has held positions at Eastern Kentucky University, Bucknell University and Stony Brook University.

“We’re excited to have Paul join our staff,” said Athletic Director Sue Lauder. “He brings an extensive football resume to Fitchburg State that will be an invaluable asset to our college.”

McGonagle is a 1999 graduate of the University of Kentucky where he was a tight end and offensive lineman. He was a teammate of former top draft pick Tim Couch. McGonagle earned his bachelor’s degree in Sports Management and went on to earn a master’s degree in Sports Administration from Eastern Kentucky University.

“I am very thankful to both President Antonucci and Sue Lauder for the opportunity to become the head football coach at Fitchburg State College,” McGonagle noted. “Coaching football has always been my passion, and I feel privileged that I have been given the chance to make an impact on the livesof the student-athletes.My wifeand I are excited about becoming a part of the FSC community and I am looking forward to what lies aheadfor our football program.”

Coach McGonagle resides in Reading, Massachusetts with his wife Jaime and their three daughters Sophia (5), Isabella (3) and new-born Ava.
