Walter Paschal's Falcons wrapped up their best season to date, winning the MASCAC regular season and tournament titles. FSC did not stop there. The Falcons won their first-ever NCAA Tournament game against Norwich University (VT) and almost pulled off an upset of Southern Maine, which played in the National Championship in 2006, in the second round.
At 26-3, FSC set program standards for most wins in a season and longest winning streak in a season. After a season-opening loss, Fitchburg reeled off 23 straight victories. The team was ranked as high as No. 24 in the NCAA Division III Coaches Poll and earned a No. 2 ranking in the NCAA Division III Northeast Poll. The Falcons also had plenty of individual accolades bestowed upon them.
Senior guard D'yana Delpero (Peabody, MA/Peabody) was the 2006-2007 MASCAC Player of the Year and freshman guard Krystle O'Brien (Malden, MA/Malden) earned the 2006-2007 MASCAC Rookie of the Year while coach Paschal garnered 2006-2007 MASCAC Coach of the Year for the second time in his tenure with the team. He also was named the D3Hoops.com Northeast Coach of the Year as well as the Women's Basketball Coaches Association Regional Coach of the Year. Moreover, Fitchburg seniors Jen Fontaine (Dracut, MA/Dracut) and Delpero each eclipsed the 1,000-point barrier. Fontaine finished her career as the fourth-leading scorer in school history while Delpero leaves the Green & Gold as the No. 2 scorer in program history.
In 2004-2005, the Falcons won 23 games while reaching
the MASCAC Tournament and the ECAC New England Championship finals. For his efforts, Paschal was named MASCAC Coach of the
Year.
Prior to his arrival at Fitchburg State, Paschal served as an assistant
coach at Framingham State for two seasons and Emerson for a year.
He also crafted his trade at the high school level where he was
the assistant varsity coach at Newton North.
Paschal, a Bridgewater State graduate, teaches adaptive physical
education at the Learning Prep School in West Newton. Walter lives in Holden with his four year-old daughter,
Abby, and one year old son, Logan.
