M.Ed. Special Education � Teacher of Students with Severe Disabilities (all levels)  (Initial License)

PREREQUISITES (for students without prior licensure)

SPED  7020 Modifying and Adapting Curriculum (offered in Spring only)
SPED  7025 Pedagogy in Reading and Language Arts (offered in Spring only)
Child/Adolescent Development *
* Students who did not take and pass such a course in their undergraduate program must take one  at either the undergraduate or graduate level. A qualifying exam is available.

Fall I SPED 8020 Behavior Analysis and Support for Students with Severe Disabilities

SPED 8025 Curriculum Frameworks and Alternative Assessments

SPRING I SPED 7950 Physical and Medical Aspects of Working with Children with Disabilities

SPED 8022 Augmentative and Alternative Communication

SUMMER I SPED 9000 Research in Special Education

SPED XXXX Elective

FALL II SPED 8023 Services and Supports from Birth Through Adulthood

SPED 8024 Program Development in the Functional Domains

SPED 8862 Clinical Experience: Severe Disabilities*  (course extends through Spring II)

SPRING II SPED 9200 Consultation and Collaboration Strategies

3 credits

SPED 9002 Research Application Seminar (taken concurrently with SPED 8862)

* Students must pass MTEL General Curriculum exam (previously Elementary Education) prior to enrolling in SPED 8862.

Program Locations

The M.Ed. Program in Severe Disabilities is offered in three Massachusetts locations:

  1. Chelmsford at Merrimack Education Center
  2. Wellesley at Mass Bay Community College
  3. Chatham at May Institute

New cohorts typically begin in September, but may not begin each year in all three sites.  Contact anhoward@fsc.edu to find out when the next cohorts will begin.
