The Department of Special Education has
several scholarships and awards for students in Special Education. The
following awards or scholarships are given at Convocation in
April.

Awards:
UNDERGRADUATE
The
William J. Goldman Award The William J. Goldman
Award is given to an outstanding senior who has maintained excellent
standing in the areas of scholarship, leadership and community service. A
plaque is presented to the student at Convocation. This award is
determined by the Special Education faculty.
The Student Council
for Exceptional Children Award The Student Council for Exceptional
Children Award is determined by the Special Education Department faculty. This
award is presented to a student who has obtained at least a 3.0 average in
the major and who has demonstrated outstanding effort in advancing the goals of the Special Education
Club, a student chapter of
the Council for Exceptional Children which is a national professional
organization.
The Department Service
Award The Department Service Award is a plaque given to a senior
Special Education Major who the Special
Education faculty determines has given of himself/herself for the
betterment of the Department.
The Lena Caron
Award The Lena Caron Award is a plaque and a stipend given by the
teachers in Prospect School of Gardner, MA to a Special
Education student who has at least a cumulative average of 3.0. The
Special Education Department faculty award this to a senior who shows
promises as a teacher and intends to pursue graduate studies in Special
Education.
GRADUATE
The Carla Borg Award The Carla Borg Award is a
monetary award given in the former faculty member's memory by her family
and friends. It is awarded by the Special Education faculty to a graduate student who has demonstrated
extraordinary skill and effort in promoting the inclusion of all students
who happen to have disabilities.

The Kay Flynn
Scholarship
The Eunice J. Matson
Scholarship The Eunice J. Matson Scholarship was established in
1981 in memory of Eunice Matson, Director of the North Central
Massachusetts Friends of the Retarded. The student receiving the
scholarship must be full time
majoring in Special Education or Behavioral Science, they must either be a
Junior or Senior. Applications may be obtained in the Financial Aid Office
in the
Sanders building. The recipient is determined by a committee from the
Association of Retarded Citizens Office. The Award is given at a dinner in
the Fall.
The Ethel P. Mandrus
Donahue ('41) Scholarship The
Ethel P.Mandrus Donahue ('41) Scholarship is awarded to a Springfield area
incoming Freshman from Western Massachusetts based on need or merit with a
preference to need. Applicants should have a GPA of 3.0 or better and
involvement in school activities.
The Dorothy Meilinger
Award The Dorothy Meilinger Award has a stipend of $100 which
is given to a Special Education student who has a GPA of
3.5. Applications can be obtained in the Financial Aid Office in the
Sanders building.
The Carol Mulloy
Scholarship The Carol Mulloy Scholarship is awarded to a
Fitchburg area Sophomore or or Senior based upon need (first priority) and
merit. Applicants must meet or exceed the college requirements for the
major and GPA.
There is also State Scholarship Award for Special
Education Majors. The information is available in the Financial Aid
Office located in the Sanders Building on Campus.
