Your undergraduate students are invited to compete in the
American Collegiate Moot Court Association (ACMA)
Eastern Regional Qualifying Tournament
November 20-21, 2009
The ACMA Eastern regional tournament is scheduled for November 20-21, 2009 at Fitchburg State College (MA). Fitchburg is located in north central Massachusetts about fifty miles west of Boston. Only undergraduate students are eligible to compete. Last year, 54 teams took part in this competition and this year promises to be even bigger. Due to the continuing growth of the event, there will now be a limit of five teams per school.
Once again this year, regional tournaments will act as qualifying tournaments for teams wishing to compete at the national tournament to be held January 15-16 at the Florida International University School of Law in Miami. The national tournament will be limited to 64 teams. The top 20% of teams competing at each regional will receive an automatic invitation to the national tournament. The remaining bids will be determined by the national tournament committee. To compete in the national tournament, teams must first compete in a sanctioned regional event.
At the regional tournaments, two-person teams will be required to present oral arguments (briefs not required) in three preliminary rounds on Friday afternoon, November 20. Each team will represent both petitioner and respondent. Order of argument and matching teams will be determined randomly. The sixteen highest scoring teams will then compete on Saturday, November 21, in single elimination rounds. Trophies will be awarded to participants who make the break.
The case, State of Olympus State v. William DeNolf Jr. is a closed problem; contestants may only use the cases listed in the problem in making their arguments. The case looks at issues surrounding the 4th and 8th Amendments. This is the same case that will be argued at the national tournament at Florida International University School of Law in January 2010.
The tournament case can also be accessed on the web at: http://falcon.fsc.edu/mootcourt/
The registration form should be completed no later than November 1, 2009, along with payment of $75 per team. Checks should be made payable to Fitchburg State College.
