Exercise Science Laboratory
MISSION:
The basic mission of the Exercise Science Laboratory in the Department
of Exercise and Sport Science is for TEACHING, RESEARCH,
and SERVICE.
The Laboratory is primarily for teaching , where students can gain
hands-on-experience utilizing a variety of basic high tech instruments
that are commonly used for research and in clinical settings. Associated
with the Laboratory is a well equipped Fitness Center where students
interested in the fitness industry may obtain valuable practical
experience. The Laboratory will be used for such courses as Exercise
Physiology, Biomechanics, Motor Learning, Exercise Testing and Prescription,
and Scientific Foundation of Strength & Conditioning. We will
provide an opportunity for student and faculty research
utilizing a variety of basic equipment to answer questions related
with the exercise sciences. We have the potential to extend beyond
the laboratory and provide the college, local, state, national and
international communities with educational, collaborative and consulting
services.
SPECIFIC GOALS:
- To provide laboratory experiences for students related with
their academic course work and career goals. Beyond the formal
course work an opportunity to gain experience in our research
and fitness programs can be provided.
- To provide exercise testing for the purpose of preparing optimal
training programs for endurance athletes. These services will
be offered to the community for a small fee.
- To provide consulting services for business, educational, public
safety, and community organizations for physical fitness programming,
health appraisal, and fitness testing.
- To conduct contract research related to fitness for business
and public institutions.
- To conduct applied research related with physical fitness and
athletics.
EQUIPMENT AVAILABLE:
- A Quniton Instruments Q55 XT treadmill, one Quinton cycle ergometer, and three Monark cycle ergometers.
- Parvomedics Metabolic Cart
- Biodex Isokinetic equipment for the
assessment of muscle function and rehabilitation.
- Quinton Electrocardiograph (EKG) Equipment.
- TEEM 100 Metabolic Analyzer.
- Lactate Analyzers.
- Biopac Research Electromyography Equipment
- Motion Analysis Equipment
- Body Composition Analysis Equipment (skinfold calipers, bioelectrical impedance)
- Goniometers and other anthropometric equipment.
