- September, 2008. We welcome Dr. Jennifer Berg to the department as an Assistant Professor. She joins us after recently finishing her Ph.D. from the University of California, Berkeley.
- In June 2008, Dr. Peter Staab traveled to the Conference on Undergraduate Research and Teaching at Montclair State University in New Jersey with Math Majors Erin Farrell and Charles Fisher. Dr. Staab gave an invited talk at the conference and Charlie and Erin presented their work at a poster presentation.
- On May 17, 2008, the Department of Mathematics graduated three Math majors at the Fitchburg State College Graduation Ceremony. Shawn Case, Jennifer Crounse and Colleen Rose all graduated with honors at the ceremony.
- In April 2008, Dr. Peter Staab traveled to the Hudson River Undergraduate Mathematics Conference with Math Majors Shawn Case, Charles Fisher, and Colleen Rose, who each presented a 10-minute talk.
- In September 2007, the Department of Mathematic was named the Massachusetts Eta Chapter of the Pi Mu Epsilon Mathematical Honor Society.
Welcome to Fitchburg State College's Department of Mathematics. The Department of Mathematics serves all students at the college. Mathematics majors receive a comprehensive foundation in abstract and applied mathematics as preparation for graduate school or a professional career. Minors in Mathematics receive the mathematical foundation needed for advanced work in their major field. The department also provides non-majors with courses for their major or with courses for their Liberal Arts and Sciences program.
The Department provide bachelor's degrees in Mathematics as well a the requirements for the minor. Students within our Mathematics major can pursue initial licensure as high school Mathematics teachers. This program provides students with both a broad introduction to high school teaching and specific instruction in the theory, research and practice of secondary Mathematics teaching.
