The Course Reserve Service is provided for all Fitchburg State faculty and students, in both on-campus and distributed learning programs. It consists of two components: the physical Course Reserve Desk and the online ERes, Electronic Reserves. The Course Reserves Desk and Office is part of the Circulation Desk and Office in the Access Services Department.
Reserve Materials Policy:
The Reserve Item Service is provided for Fitchburg State faculty and students, both in on-campus programs and distributed learning programs.
It consists of two components:
Placing Items On/Off the Reserve Desk
On Reserve
- The professor will bring the item(s) to the Circulation Desk and request that it be placed on Reserve. (If an item is a Library book, the professor may call/email and ask that we locate it and place it on Reserve.)
- The professor needs to include the following information:
- His/her name, department, course name & number, and campus extension.
- Note how long the item is to be on Reserve (Fall Semester only, year, etc.). For photocopied items used for the same course beyond one semester, copyright permission is required unless the item is in the public domain. Please see the Access Services Librarian or Circulation Assistant if you have any questions.
- Reserve items are assumed to be for In Library Use Only, unless the professor requests that an item be allowed to circulate 24 hours or 1 week. (This is not encouraged as we cannot guarantee when the student will actually bring the item back.)
- The Reserve Desk is automated and items are now added to the online catalog. As a result we will need to attach a library barcode to personal copies.
- Allow at least 2-5 business days for processing, before the items will be available on the Reserve Shelf for student usage.
*Note: Reserve Items will be processed on a 1st come, 1st prepared basis, as soon as possible, so please plan accordingly.
- Professors are responsible for acquiring copyright permission as needed. Please provide the library with a copy of your copyright permission letter. Until you receive the letter either granting or denying you permission, we can still place the item on Reserve as long as we have a copy of your copyright request letter. However, if permission is denied, the item must be taken off of Reserve.
Off Reserve:
- A professor may come in or call at any time and ask the circulation assistant to take personal copies and/or library items off of Reserve.
- We ask that you please pick up your personal reserve item(s) at the end of the semester (unless it is remaining on Reserve). Library items will automatically be taken off, unless we are notified otherwise.
- Articles may be picked up or sent to the professor through campus mail. (Articles can not remain on Reserve for more than one semester, unless you provide the Circulation Department with a copy of a "Copyright Permission Request Letter".)
Placing Items On/Off ERes - Electronic Reserves
On Reserve:
- The professor may bring the item(s) to the Circulation Desk and request that it be placed on ERes (we will digitize it so that it can be loaded into ERes) or the request can be sent through email to our departmment account at eresmanager@fsc.edu with the materials included as attachments if they are already in a digitized format, such as a copy of your syllabus, a suggested reading list that you created in MS Word, a PowerPoint Presentation, etc. or by providing each article's citation information if it is in a print journal that we own or is full text in one of our online databases.
- The professor needs to include the following information:
* His/her name, department, course name & number, and campus extension. (If more than one instructor is teaching the course please provide each instructor's name, as the name(s) provided will be the only person(s) authorized to request additional materials be loaded to ERes for that specific course.)
* Note how long the item is to be on Reserve (Fall Semester only, year, etc.)
- Please keep in mind the copyright laws. Most items, including those copyright protected, can be placed on reserve for one semester for academic purposes under the guidelines of fair use. (Articles can not remain on Reserve for more than one semester, unless you provide the Circulation Department with a copy of a "Copyright Permission Request Letter".)
- Allow at least 2-5 business days for processing, before the items will be available online in ERes for student usage.
*Note: Reserve Items will be processed on a 1st come, 1st prepared basis, as soon as possible, so please plan accordingly. Also, please remember that the digitized form of that item will only be as good as the original that was used.
- Professors are responsible for acquiring copyright permission as needed. Please provide the library with a copy your copyright permission letter. Until you receive the letter either granting or denying you permission, we can still place the item on Reserve as long as we have a copy of your copyright request letter. However, if permission is denied, the item must be taken off of Reserve.
Off Reserve:
- A professor may come in, call or email at any time and ask the circulation assistant to take items or a course off of ERes.
- Both items and courses will be archived on our server so that they can quickly and easily be reactivated if needed.
- At the end of each semester items will automatically be taken off of your ERes course and archived, unless you notify us otherwise. (Articles can not remain on Reserve for more than one semester, unless you provide the Circulation Department with a copy of a "Copyright Permission Request Letter.)
