Leadership Academy: Thesis Sample Timeline

Advising Period—Spring of Junior Year

Week 1 of the Fall Semester (Senior Year)

  • Begin meeting with Faculty Advisor on a weekly basis to refine the research topic. 
  • Advisor and student will select second reader for the committee.  The second reader will be another committee member who may be a member of the same department, an outside member of the faculty at FSC, or an outside person who has expertise in the project.  These two people will comprise the Research Committee for the project.
  • If not already completed, the student and Faculty Advisor will complete the Preliminary Abstract form (word document) that will be submitted to the Thesis Coordinator.  The submitted material should include the members of the Research Committee, the working title, and the abstract.

September through December

  • During the Fall Semester students will meet with their advisors on a regular basis.  Weekly or bimonthly meeting may be appropriate depending on the needs of the student and the nature of the project.

November

  • Students must register for Senior Thesis Writing for the spring semester
  • Complete updated Proposal Abstract Form (word document) with Faculty Advisor (Sponsor)

December

  • Each student will present a research proposal/prospectus at a group meeting including all Advisors, thesis students, and the Thesis Coordinator.
  • The Faculty Advisor will make evaluations of the student’s progress and necessary adjustments to the project.  Advisor will assign student a grade for the semester’s work.

January through April

  • Continued meetings in the spring semester between the Faculty Advisor and the student to review the progress of the work.  Students should submit written portions or sections of completed portions of the work on a weekly or biweekly basis.

March

  • Students will prepare applications and abstracts for submission to the Massachusetts Public System of Higher Education Annual Conference on Undergraduate Research by the first week in March.  Faculty Advisors should review these applications and then students should submit their applications to the Thesis Coordinator.
  • Students should submit a complete working draft of the project to their Research Committees by the end of March.  Research Committees will review and return the draft to the students for corrections.  Students and Faculty Advisors will develop a plan with dates for the corrections.

April

Week 1 of May

  • The project must be in its final form and graded by the 1st week of May.  Copies should be submitted to the Research Committee and Thesis Coordinator.
