Information Technology: Netiquette Guidelines

Email and electronic messaging are as common today as postcards and telegrams were in years gone by. The Golden Rule applies online just as it does in all our other interpersonal exchanges. For clear and courteous communications the following guidelines should be practiced.

  • Use meaningful subject lines when sending or posting messages.
  • Use ALL CAPS in headings or emphasis only. When used in the body of a message all caps is the equivalent of shouting.
  • Don't assume email is private.
  • Remember there is a person behind the computer and we are all human. Sometimes face-to-face is better for discussions.
  • Electronic communication has its limitations.
    • You can't see facial expressions so be careful when using sarcasm and humor.
    • Remember it's a diverse world. Consider cultural and language differences.
    • Be careful not to assume the worst when reading a message. It is easy to misinterpret meaning or the sender's intention.
  • No flaming (expressing strongly held opinions in a forceful manner).
    • Avoid volatile statements and offensive language.
    • Read twice, send once. If you are upset about a message postpone before sending your reply.
    • Focus on ideas and not the person.
  • Everyone makes mistakes. Avoid public critique.
  • Consider your audience and be respectful of others' time. Practice judicious use of "Reply All."
  • Use shared electronic resources wisely. Limit size of attachments and avoid sending large messages to distribution lists (i.e. staff@fsc.edu).
  • Keep it simple. Distracting backgrounds and competing colors make your message difficult to read and consume server resources.
  • Don't spam (unsolicited mass mailing) or forward chain letters. Be aware of the college's Acceptable Use Policy.
  • It is important that virus alerts only be distributed by the IT Help Desk. Call 978-665-4500 if you suspect you have a virus or have received a notice of a virus threat.
