Studying in the United States is an exciting
prospect but can also be a frightening one. Unfortunately,
the excitement is often accompanied by anxiety, apprehension,
confusion and nervousness upon your arrival. These are common
emotions upon entering an unfamiliar culture. One of the first
resources that can assist you in dealing with these feelings
along with immigration related issues is the staff from the
Office of International Education.
Our office is staffed by Dr. Clare O'Brien,
the Director of International Education and Jean Varchol, the Administrative
Assistant. We realize that adjusting to life in a new country
can be overwhelming at times. You may have questions about
your living situation, academics, the American culture, or
immigration issues. Please feel free to stop by to see us.
If your issue is not very pressing and it is busy in the office,
we may ask you to make an appointment. If you need to meet
with Dr. O'Brien right away, please let us know. We can be
reached at (978) 665-3089.
The Office of International Education offers
several other services to international students. You will
be invited to attend informative sessions on issues ranging
from income tax regulations to completing your year of practical
training. One of our main goals though is to create a strong
community among the international students. We try to accomplish
this formally, by offering several social programs throughout
the year, and informally, by inviting you to stop by the office
to say hello and check in.
The Office of International Education is
also responsible for record keeping for the Bureau of Citizenship
and Immigration Services (BCIS). It is therefore essential
that we have all international students current address and
phone numbers in our records in case we are ever asked about
your whereabouts. Failure to provide this could result in
serious difficulties with the BCIS so please be sure that
your address information is current. If you move, just stop
by our office and fill out an updated address form.
We also try to assist the international students
in their adjustment by fostering interaction with the American
students on campus. Many of our activities are open to American
students as well. The Office of International Education also
assists students who would like to study abroad. We provide
these students with resources and guidance as they prepare
for this valuable learning experience.
Be sure to look for our monthly newsletter
letting you know of the upcoming programs and sessions, along
with any important BCIS updates. You can find the Director
in the basement of the SandersBuilding, across from the GCE
office. Please check in with Jean at the GCE office first if
you need to see Dr. O'Brien. If you are in the area, please
come by and visit!
