Three week program from May 24, 2010 – June 21, 2010

 

Courses:

HUMxxxx:  Chinese Culture

How do the ancient philosophical traditions of China directly influence China’s current business climate?  How does China’s history of innovation affect its current role in global technology development?  What facets of Chinese language give the Western student or business traveler clues to important aspects of Chinese culture?  Students will explore these questions through introductory courses in Chinese language and in several aspects of Chinese culture in this survey course.  No prerequisites.  CTW, GDC.

Instructor: Dr. Xuzhou “Brady” Chen, 3 Credits

 

HISTxxxx:  Topics: Marco Polo in China

Accompany the West’s most famous world traveler, Marco Polo, on a journey of discovery to China and a city visited by Polo himself – Hangzhou. In this course, students will examine Polo’s Travels and the trans-Eurasian trade that carried him to China and silk to Europe. Using Hangzhou as a living laboratory, students will explore places seen by traders like Polo in the late 1200s and learn what it was like to be a foreign merchant in the Far East. No prerequisites.  CTW, GDC.

Instructor: Dr. Daniel Sarefield, 3 Credits

Housing:

Students receive free on-campus accommodations in exchange for spending afternoons helping Chinese university students practice their English conversation skills.

Excursions:

Beijing: Great Wall, Olympic “Bird’s Nest”, Ming Tombs

Shanghai: Shanghai Museum, Yu Garden, the Oriental Pearl TV Tower, and a ride on a maglev bullet train.
