Department of Occupational And Vocational Education
Program Description
The program is committed to teaching which brings about desired changes in the instructor's knowledge, skills, attitudes and appreciation level of those in training. A significant component of the program is the availability to students at off-campus vocational technical school sites located across the central "corridor" of the Commonwealth. Job relevance and valid reliable vocational technical practice within the program are attained through participatory planning and affiliation with industry, vocational technical school practitioners, professional associates and representatives of the college.
The college offers 3 alternatives for consideration. The professional teacher license program is a 39 credit program which includes 7 pedagogical courses and 6 three credit academic courses (2 sciences, 2 maths and 2 English).
The Bachelor of Science program is a 120 credit program where the entire 39 credits earned for professional licensure are included. Students are eligible to transfer up to 60 credits from a community college toward this degree. However there are 36 credits in the Occ. Ed. major offered in this degree. Every student must enroll in a minimum of 18 credits, (not including trade experience) from the Fitchburg State College Occ.Ed. Department in order to qualify for graduation.
In recognition of the extensive life experience which make vocational technical personnel unique, the program offers a special trade experience incentive of up to twelve credits. Candidates may apply for trade experience consideration after completing eighty credits in the program. (Trade Experience)
Many students have completed this degree without ever attending a course on the FSC campus.
The Master of Education is a 36 credit degree program designed for vocational administrators where students enroll in 8 required courses and 4 electives which may include Teacher Licensure courses.
