H1N1 - Information for Students

There have been a few cases of probable H1N1 on campus with no pattern.

If you have questions regarding symptoms and treatment of H1N1, I would refer you to the website www.flu.gov.

Health Services is recommending the following steps for students:

Students who develop symptoms of H1N1 and are pregnant or have diabetes, asthma or any chronic condition should contact Health Services or their primary care provider immediately.

Health Services is encouraging students who can travel in a private car to go home and remain there until they have no fever for 24 hours without the use of Tylenol or Ibuprofen, which lowers body temperature. (The new maximum dose of Tylenol is now 650 mg—not 1000 mg.)

Students who have no means of transportation home should isolate themselves in their residence hall rooms with the door shut and notify their RA. RAs have “flu kits” that contain masks, thermometers, tea bags and the booklet “Flu, What You Can Do.”

Please put a mask on when using the bathrooms to avoid spreading the virus. You can take Ibuprofen or Tylenol for body aches, and be sure to drink plenty of fluids and get lots of sleep.

Cough into your sleeve and wash your hands with hand sanitizer after using a Kleenex or touching your face.

If you need medical advice call Health Services at 978-665-3216. As noted above, you can return to classes when your temperature is normal for 24 hours with no Tylenol or Ibuprofen.

Your RA or building director will obtain food for you from Chartwells.

E-mail your professors, notifying them that you are ill and will not be in class until you are well. Medical excuses should not be required by your professors for the flu.

Call Health Services immediately (or, if it is after 5 p.m. or on a weekend, Campus Police at 978-665-3111) if you develop the following symptoms: Confusion, bluish or gray skin color, trouble breathing, severe, persistent diarrhea and lightheadedness, severe abdominal pain, or a stiff neck accompanied by a fever and/or a rash.
