Prevention is the best treatment. Tips to avoid getting the flu are included in the following list.
Washing your hands frequently is key (before eating, after using the bathroom, after coughing, etc.).
Get the yearly flu vaccination from Health Services.
Avoid close contact with those who are sick or when you are sick,stand 3 feet away from another person. BE CONSIDERATE.
Cover your nose and mouth when coughing or sneezing to prevent contamination of your surroundings.
Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth. All are portals of entry for viruses and bacteria.
Eat a healthy balanced diet and get 6-8 hours of sleep a night.
If you have the flu, some things you can do for yourself include the following.
Rest.
Drink plenty of fluids.
Take Tylenol or ibuprofen for fever and discomfort. Follow the package directions for appropriate administration.
Use decongestants for a stuffy nose. Follow the package directions for appropriate administration.
Avoid smoke and alcohol.
Seek medical attention if your fever reaches 102 degrees, there are white spots on your tonsils, breathing or swallowing become difficult, you notice a skin rash or if you were recently exposed to strep. Make an appointment at Health Services(ext 3216) if you are concerned about any symptoms you have.
