Robert Brooks

About the Speaker

Dr. Robert Brooks, a psychologist on the faculty of Harvard Medical School, has lectured nationally and internationally and written extensively about working with or raising angry, resistant youth from a strength-based approach that focuses on the development of self-discipline, motivation, responsibility, caring, hope, and resilience.  Among his books he is the author of The Self-Esteem Teacher, and co-author of Raising Resilient Children; The Power of Resilience: Achieving Balance, Confidence, and Personal Strength in Your Life; Angry Children, Worried Parents: Seven Steps to Help Families Manage Anger; Understanding and Managing Children’s Classroom Behavior: Creating Sustainable, Resilient Classrooms; and the recently released Raising a Self-Disciplined Child.  Dr. Brooks also completed a videotape and educational guide for PBS titled “Look What You’ve Done! Stories of Hope and Resilience” and has served as a consultant for Sesame Street Parents Magazine.  Among his numerous awards is the Outstanding Educator Award for Mental Health Education from the New England Educational Institute.

About the Event

Angry, resistant youth pose difficult challenges for both parents and professionals alike.  Many adults, frustrated by the lack of cooperation and provocative behavior of these children and adolescents, resort to a more punitive approach that unfortunately, is counterproductive.  In this workshop, Dr. Brooks will offer an alternative model rooted in the concept of mindsets.  He will describe the characteristics of mindsets that are self-defeating and those that are associated with self-discipline and resilience.  This model can be applied in residential programs, schools, and homes.  He will highlight the mindset of adults who are effective with uncooperative, resistant youth.

Among the topics covered will be:

• The power of mindsets in determining our behavior
• The importance of empathy in understanding and responding effectively with resistant youth
• Exercises to promote empathy
• The need to assume “personal control” for our behavior
• The importance of identifying and reinforcing each youngster’s “islands of competence”
• The characteristics of a resilient mindset
• Strategies to nurture a resilient mindset in resistant, at-risk children and adolescents
