The Shepherd Award in Creative Writing is named in honor of the late Louis P. Shepherd, a longtime English Professor at Fitchburg StateCollege.
The award is made possible through a gift from Professor Shepherd's wife, Ruth, and his daughter, Rae Shepherd-Shlechter. The author of several novels, Professor Shepherd was for many years a book reviewer for The Boston Herald and the Worcester Sunday Telegram. Before joining the Fitchburg State faculty in1952, he taught at Stanford and at Oregon State College.
As its name suggests, the Shepherd Award in Creative Writing is for the year's best student portfolio of creative writing. The award is open to all students regardless of major and/or formal course work n English. The portfolio need not be extensive, but should represent a selection of the writer's best work. This means a minimum of two and a maximum of five pieces of writing. The writing may be in any creative genre and the writer may submit writing in more than one genre. An applicant may, for example, submit one poem, an autobiographical essay, and a short story. Suggested genres include short story, poetry, autobiography, creative essay, personal and reflective narrative, drama (plays, scripts, monologues).
All submissions should be typed and doubled spaced. The author's name should not appear on the manuscript itself but on a separate cover sheet which lists the titles of the pieces submitted. The deadline for submission in the spring of each year.

MATTI N. ANTILA POETRY AWARD

The Matti N. Antila Poetry Award is made possible by a generous gift to the college from Lauri and Signe Sipila in memory of Signe's parents, Matti N. and Fanny P. Antila.
A panel of judges from the English Department will evaluate poems submitted to the department in the spring of each year. The author's name should not appear on the manuscript itself but on a separate cover sheet which lists the titles of the pieces submitted. Entries will be judged anonymously.
Poems of any style and subject are encouraged, once they display skill and thoughfulness. Poems should be approximately 25 lines, but longer and shorter poems will also be considered.
The judges will select one poem as prize winner.
