Requirements For the Major in English (after 2008)

All English majors across the four tracks must complete 21 credits from Core courses. Approaches to English Studies (ENGL 2999) provides an introduction to the discipline. All English majors must satisfactorily complete the course by the end of their sophomore year. Transfer students must take ENGL 2999 during their first year at the college, unless exempted by the Department Chair, based on evaluation of transfer course work. In addition to ENGL 2999, English majors in all tracks must also complete three literature survey courses, one upper-division literature course, one upper-division writing-intensive course, and the Capstone course with a senior portfolio. Individual tracks—Literature (with a total of 42 credits), Initial Teaching Licensure (with a total of 76 credits), Professional Writing (with a total of 42 credits), and Theater (with a total of 42 credits)—have specific course requirements in addition to the above Core of 21 credits.

Internship

The English Department, through its internship program, offers an opportunity for seniors and second-semester juniors to explore a profession for one full semester of work and credit. The internship enables students to apply theoretical knowledge and laboratory-developed skills in an actual professional setting. Students in the program have enjoyed an unusually high level of job-entry success.

English majors can experience a wide range of professional activity in fields such as radio, television, journalism, personnel work, library functions (school, public, or technical), public relations, law, government, human services, theater and technical productions. New Internship positions are identified each semester. Department approval is required.
