Expanding Horizons: Program Description
What is Expanding Horizons?
Expanding Horizons is a Student Support Services(SSS) program designed
to promote the academic success of FSC students who are from low
income backgrounds, families in which neither parent has received
a baccalaureate degree, and / or students with disabilities. Funded
by the federal government, Expanding Horizons is part of the nationwide
network of TRIO Programs
established more than thirty years ago. TRIO
programs have helped an estimated 2 million students to enter and
graduate from college despite barriers due to race, ethnic background,
socioeconomic circumstances, or disability.
Who is Eligible?
To be eligible for Expanding Horizons, a student must be a citizen
or National of the United States or meet the residency requirements
for Federal financial assistance; be enrolled or accepted for enrollment
at Fitchburg State College and meet at least one of the following
eligibility criteria
Eligibility Criteria:
- Be low-income according to Federal guidelines
- Be first generation to attend college (neither parent completed
a college degree)
and /or
- Be a person with a disability
- In addition, the student must also demonstrate an academic
need for the program such as having a low high school or college
GPA or SAT score or by placing into developmental courses. Developmental
courses include Basic Reading, Basic Writing, Basic Math I or
II. Students with a major which requires a higher minimum GPA
such as: Nursing, Education, Communications or Human Services
may also qualify.
