Expanding Horizons: Career Development
The Expanding Horizons Program (EHP) is able to offer EHP students the benefit of a career counselor on staff. EHP’s career counselor provides the expertise to help students individually and in a group setting, with the decision-making process regarding major, career exploration issues, graduate school preparation and job preparedness.
Each semester, we offer seminars to assist students at every stage of their career development. In these seminars, students learn about the career exploration process and how to utilize it throughout their academic career with Fitchburg State College (FSC) and beyond. To view descriptions of our seminar offerings please refer to our calendar. Together, students become more aware of the varied occupations in existence. They learn where to look for information about careers and occupations. We discuss skills that employers consider important and then work toward mastery of those skills throughout their time at FSC.
Through use of the Career Development component of the EHP program, students can work with our career counselor to gain a better understanding of themselves through assessment tools such as the Myers Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI), interest inventories and skills assessments. Students can learn about informational interviewing, job shadowing, and other exploration tools, while building a solid foundation for understanding the world of work.
Students can utilize the program’s career counselor for advice on any career-related topic, including resume and cover letter writing, skills in researching and communicating with employers, interviewing, networking, and job search techniques. Each Spring the program invites students to participate in the large annual Colleges of Worcester Consortium (COWC) job fair, providing support and transportation for the event.
Once students enter the final steps of their time at FSC, the EHP program offers information to help them transition successfully from an academic to a workplace environment. This transition can be an exciting time, and students often take advantage of seminars offered by the program to learn about living on their own outside of the academic environment.
Our philosophy is to develop a solid and comprehensive understanding of one’s career development throughout a student’s time in our program. Any questions can be directed to Beth Hallet, Career Counselor & Peer Mentor Program Coordinator at ext. 3373.
