Awards Scholarships and Honors

Each year the Department recognizes outstanding seniors at the college's Annual Honors Convocation, held each April.

 

Scholarships

The Kay Flynn Scholarship

The Eunice J. Matson Scholarship
The Eunice J. Matson Scholarship was established in 1981 in memory of Eunice Matson, Director of the North Central Massachusetts Friends of the Retarded. The student receiving the scholarship must be full time majoring in Special Education or Behavioral Science, they must either be a Junior or Senior. Applications may be obtained in the Financial Aid Office in the Sanders building. The recipient is determined by a committee from the Association of Retarded Citizens Office. The Award is given at a dinner in the Fall.

The Ethel P. Mandrus Donahue ('41) Scholarship
The Ethel P.Mandrus Donahue ('41) Scholarship is awarded to a Springfield area incoming Freshman from Western Massachusetts based on need or merit with a preference to need. Applicants should have a GPA of 3.0 or better and involvement in school activities.

The Dorothy Meilinger Award 
The Dorothy Meilinger Award has a stipend of $100 which is given to a Special Education student who has a GPA of 3.5. Applications can be obtained in the Financial Aid Office in the Sanders building.
 

Honors

Students are eligible for a variety of academic honors including:

Who's Who Among Students in American Universities and colleges
Each fall, nominations are made to the Dean of Curriculum and Instruction. Students who maintain a high academic average of 3.5 + and have participated in civic or college activities are eligible.

The President's List
Students with a grade point average of 3.75 for three consecutive semesters are recognized by the Fitchburg State College President.

The Dean's List
Students with a grade point average of 3.20 are recognized for this distinction.

Kappa Delta Pi National Education Honor Society
Kappa Delta Pi was organized to recognize excellence in education. It encourages improvement, distinction in achievement and contributions to education. Selection is based on a cumulative average of 3.20, a commitment to education as a career and a professional attitude that assures steady growth in the profession.

Honors / Leadership Program
The Fitchburg State College Leadership program provides an integrated set of courses for entering honors students. The Freshman program includes extensive reading. The leadership seminar introduces students to a wide variety of faculty projects. The program offers extra-curricula experiences for cultural enrichment. The culmination of the honors program is the research and writing of an independent thesis. Consult the office of Academic Affairs (978) 665-3168 for further information.

The Owens Mara Scholarship is given each academic year to a Junior in Elementary Education with outstanding academic strengths and promise as a teacher. This award was established by the eight President of Fitchburg State College (1976 - 1996), Dr. Vincent J. and Mrs. Claire Owens Mara.

The Robert A. Fitzmaurice Connors '63 Scholarship is awarded to a full-time student in the Early Childhood Education Program who demonstrates the ability to be an outstanding early childhood educator.

Dr. Helen O'Flaherty Scholarship, in honor of a former professor, is awarded annually to a student majoring in Early Childhood Education who demonstrates financial need.  Membership in a minority group will confer preference. The prior year recipient will automatically receive the award if he or she maintains satisfactory academic progress under college policies.

The Class of 1950 Scholarship is given each academic year to an Education Major.

The Jeanne M.Joyal '53 Endowed Scholarship will provide scholarship assistance to a resident of Western Massachusetts who will be a first-year student and major in elementary education. The recipient must have a minimum 3.0 grade point average in high school and demonstrate school and community participation. Ms. Joyal was an elementary school teacher in Chicopee, Massachusetts, and Enfield, Connecticut. Most recently she retired from her duties as a supervisor of teacher education at Westfield State.

Departmental Scholarships are available from the Financial Aid Office. High consideration is given to those students with a record of academic excellence and departmental service.

The Carol Mulloy Scholarship 
The Carol Mulloy Scholarship is awarded to a Fitchburg area Sophomore or or Senior based upon need (first priority) and merit. Applicants must meet or exceed the college requirements for the major and GPA.

There is also State Scholarship Award for Special Education Majors. The information is available in the Financial Aid Office located in the Sanders Building on Campus.
 

The award criteria includes the following: academic excellence as seen in the overall cum and major cum; college community involvement; community involvement outside the college; the breadth and diversity of questions asked in college courses; excellence as evidenced in pre-practicum experiences and excellence in student teaching.

Student award winners receive an engraved plaque and their names are added to a departmental honor roll for posterity.
