Distance Learning: Frequently Asked Questions

  1. Who is Eligible?

    Part-time faculty with a minimum of three consecutive semesters of teaching service and all full-time FSC faculty who have a minimum of basic computer literacy (e.g., is familiar with word processing and e-mail).
  2. What kind of Course is eligible?

    • The Course is in the FSC catalog.
    • If it is a new Course, it is approved through the established processes for approving any new course.
    • The course will be taught through GCE (Graduate and Continuing Education).
  3. What are the steps needed before beginning development of the course?

  4. What is the remuneration for developing a Distance Learning Class?

    Courses may be eligible for a development stipend, please contact the Distance Education Coordinator.
  5. What is the remuneration for teaching a Distance learning Class?

    Teaching a Distance Learning Class will be remunerated like any other class. Faculty will be paid their GCE rate, based on academic rank. Remuneration for Teaching a Distance Learning Class
  6. What kind of support will be available for developing Distance Learning Courses?

  1. What are the steps needed before offering the course?

    • The course will be scheduled and advertised in the same way as normal courses.
    • The completed Distance Learning course must, at minimum, be reviewed and approved by the Course Developer, the Program Chair and/or Department Chair along with the Distance Education Coordinator and the Dean.
  2. Who “Owns” the completed course?

    Fitchburg State College maintains “Ownership” of the course, while the Instructor maintains the Intellectual properties built in the class.
  3. How are Faculty paid for teaching the completed course?

    Faculty will be remunerated at the same MSCA contract rate for teaching internet-based courses as they are for their other courses.
