This institute is designed to equip teachers, administrators and paraprofessionals with knowledge and skills needed to create and maintain a positive classroom and school environment that facilitates teacher and student success. Participants will explore positive behavior support through multiple strands including: utilizing an effective Functional Behavioral Assessment (FBA), designing and implementing an individual Behavior Support Plan (BSP), and fostering a positive classroom and school climate.
Upon completion of the institute, participants will be able to:
- Participate in the planning of behavioral supports that align with Federal and State mandates related to managing behavior
- Demonstrate increased understanding of effective instructional, curricular and assessment methodologies for influencing behavior and models for implementation
- Analyze patterns of problem behavior and explore ways to design and implement classroom supports
- Work as part of a team during the problem solving and decision making process
- Demonstrate understanding of the principles of behavioral support by applying these strategies in selected classroom environments
- Implement strategies and approaches to facilitate students’ self management, social skills and increased independence

This institute is targeted to general and special educators, related service providers and paraprofessionals with elementary and secondary students with disabilities in an inclusive classroom.

Fee: No cost – institute funded by a grant from the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education.

Credit Option: At first class, participants may elect to register for 3 Graduate Credits from Fitchburg State College for a fee of $255
Register Deadline: June 14, 2010. Registrations will be accepted until institute is full.
Seating is limited and early registration is strongly encouraged. Priority seating will be given to school based teams.
