ELL – Principles of Sheltered Instruction
10/30/07 – 6/25/08; dates and times as arranged
DYS Institute, Holy Cross College
Course Description: This course is
designed as an introduction to the theories and strategies for teaching content
and grade-level subject matter to English Language Learners. It covers the required skills and knowledge
outlined in the Massachusetts Department of Education Commissioner’s June 2004
memo on Sheltered English Immersion Category 2 professional development*. This course will include strategies for
teaching subject matter and assessing student learning. It will involve a range of collaborative,
self-reflective and authentic activities that are targeted to the planning and
delivery of instruction and complement the 7 key elements that have been put
forth for the teaching of youth in DYS settings. It also provides an opportunity for teachers
to infuse the arts into ELA curriculum, as we believe this is a critical step
for better ensuring students’ active participation and investment in learning.
*Note: This course includes five days
and an optional sixth day. Participants
completing the optional sixth day will fulfill the number of hours required by
the MA Dept. of Education for completing Category 2 training for teachers of
English Language Learners.
