Advanced Placement* Institute Details

 

 

Meeting Times and Class Size:

Each institute is held Monday through Friday, from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The first session of each institute will be held in the McKay Auditorium, on the Fitchburg State campus. It is anticipated that 10 to 18 participants will attend each institute.

Fitchburg State College, one of the highest ranked Massachusetts state colleges, is located in the attractive Montachusett region of North Central Massachusetts. Who Should Attend:

High school teachers who:

  • Will be teaching an AP course for the first time
  • Have limited experience with AP courses
  • Are adapting or revisiting AP courses

 

Institute Instructors:

Each institute will be taught by experienced AP teachers, readers, test designers and college faculty with experience in AP who have been endorsed by the College Board.

 

Graduate Credit & PDPs:

Graduate Credit:

Participants may receive 3 graduate credits for an additional cost of $255 per institute. Participants must complete additional requirements defined by the institute instructor. Final papers or projects must be submitted to the instructor within three weeks of each institute's completion. Grades will be assigned within one week of that date.

Professional Development Points (PDPs):

Participants will receive 37.5 PDPs upon the completion of the institute. In order to be eligible for PDPs, participants must attend all sessions of the institute and complete all assignments.

 

On-Campus Housing & Recreational Facilities:

On-campus housing is available for institute participants at a cost of $300 per institute. Please be aware that the Fitchburg State residence halls are not air-conditioned, and bathroom facilities are shared. Pre-registration and payment prior to the start of the institute is required. Check-in is from 2 to 5 p.m. on the Sunday before the the institute begins, or participants may check in on Monday during the lunch session.

College Recreational Facilities:

Institute participants may use the college's Recreation Center, which houses an indoor pool, weight and fitness rooms, indoor track and raquetball and basketball courts during regularly posted hours for a nominal fee.

 

Institute Fees & Payment

Fees:

  • Registration Fee (Required): $755 per institute
    Includes institute fee, College Board materials, and lunch.
  • Lab Fee (Required for AP Biology and Chemistry): $20 per institute
  • Graduate Credit Fee (Optional): $255 for 3 credits, per institute
  • On-Campus Housing Fee (Optional): $300 per institute
    Includes room, shared bath facilities and breakfast and dinner in the college dining hall. Pre-registration and full payment of the on-campus housing fee is required. Student may check into campus housing form 2 to 5 p.m. on the Sunday prior to the start of the institute, or on Monday during the lunch session.

Fee Payment:

Full payment is required prior to the start of the institute. Checks and credit cards will be accepted. Purchase orders may be submitted to reserve a participant's place at the institute; however, full payment must be received prior to the start of the institute.

 

Scholarships:

Unfortunately, Department of Education scholarships are no longer available to participants. For other funding opportunities, please visit the College Board Web site.

Registration Information

The registration deadline is June 15, 2008. Registrations are processed on a first-come, first served basis. Early registration is highly recommended in order to ensure a place in the participant's institute of choice.

Confirmation of Registration:

In preparation for the institutes, some instructors will expect participants to complete reading or other assignments prior to the start of the institute. Upon receipt of a completed registration form and payment, participants will receive a confirmation packet containing important information about the institute.

 

Participant Cancellation Policy:

A $25 processing fee will be charged for any cancellation.

  • Cancellation up to two weeks prior to the start of the institute: Full refund, less $25 processing fee.
  • Cancellation two to 14 days prior to the start of the institute: 50% fees, less $25 processing fee.
  • Cancellation after the start of the institute: No refund.

 

Institute Cancellation Policy:

Fitchburg State College reserves the right to cancel an institute due to low enrollment or other reason. In this unlikely event, participants will be issued a full refund of all fees. Participants considering the purchase of non-refundable plane tickets should contact the Center for Professional Studies at (978) 665-3636 to check institute enrollment prior to making travel plans.
