A Foundation for Literacy: Reading Aloud, Storytelling & Writing

This course is designed for early childhood, elementary and middle school teachers, prospective teachers and other professionals who seek to foster children's literacy development. Individual course modules focus on: reading aloud, storytelling, planning lessons that support literacy standards and writing. Students become familiar with learning styles and multiple intelligences, apply what they learn through multisensory teaching, reflect on the results and assess their progress. They are guided by the textbook (Read it Aloud! A parent’s guide to sharing books with young children by Monty Haas and Laurie Joy Haas), expert audio files, instructional DVDs, Web resources and assignment-specific rubrics. Assignments throughout the course are completed with one or more children. Students pursuing 3 Undergraduate credits are required to complete additional coursework beyond those pursuing PDP's and students pursuing 3 Graduate credits are required to complete additional coursework beyond those pursuing the Undergraduate credits. There are no prerequisites for the course.

To utilize the course documents and instructional media and to accomplish assignments, students will need access to: a computer with CD-ROM and sound capabilities, Internet and e-mail access and Adobe® Reader® (free download available); a full-sized audiocassette recorder with a built-in microphone and a DVD player or a computer with a DVD player.
