There are generally considered to be three types of resumes:
- Chronological
- Functional
- Chronological/Functional Combines
Chronological:
- Work experience, education and other title headings are usually
listed in reverse, chronological order.
- Descriptions are brief and emphasize skills and accomplishments.
- It is easy for readers to place you in space and time to track
your development. While not critical for recent graduates, this
may be very important for people who have been out of college
for more than two years and can show a significant track record
within the field in which they are conducting their job search.
Functional:
- Information is organized by skill groups, which have immediate
relevance to the intended job target; i.e., Communication Skills,
Leadership and Organizational Ability, Management and Administrative
Skills.
- Dates are often excluded to focus on related background, not
on sequence of experience.
- One may account for a fair amount of unstructured time.
Combined Format:
Usually contains two parts:
- A presentation of experience by skill group.
- A brief, chronological listing of work history and education,
etc.
This format can be very productive for someone drawing from a variety
of seemingly unrelated experiences, such as an undergraduate or
person in transition from one career field to another, and presenting
them in a way that will make sense to an employer.
