Be aware of your disposition.
- Establish rapport with a smile, good eye contact, and a firm
handshake. Show interest through your communications, ask questions
or make comments that show your interest in the conversation.
- Listen to yourself (to avoid saying too much or too little).
- Never be defensive.
- Avoid negatives about yourself or your abilities, or past employers.
- Be aware of your non-verbal behavior (eye contact, posture,
tone of voice, nervous habits, etc.).
- Show enthusiasm for the position by being sincere, direct, and
earnest.
Show your interest and your competence.
- Be able to articulate what you are looking for and what you
can offer.
- Always be specific about what skills you have and how they match
the needs of the interviewer.
- Give direct examples of situations in which you have used your
abilities.
- Be able to discuss weaknesses.
- Reflect before answering questions--give the interviewer time
to ask the entire question and show that you are serious about
the answer.
- If you do not understand the question, politely ask to have
it clarified.
- Raise questions at the appropriate time to show interest in
the position.
- Make sure that you thank the interviewer for their time and
get their business card for follow-up after the interview.
