The Student Security Team provides a unique and educational
opportunity for students to be part of the Fitchburg State
College Police Department. Student Security Officers (SSOs)
work with other members of the Campus Police Department
in rendering pubic safety and security services to the college
community.
The Police Department employs about fourteen Student Security
Officers - some paid through limited trust fund monies and
others through work study awards received from the college's
Financial Aid Office.
SSOs usually are assigned to one or two 5 hour shifts per
week from 8:00pm to 1am. During these shifts, some of the responsibilities
of the SSOs are:
- foot patrols of college buildings and parking lots
- safety escorts (walking) to students and employees
- security checks of buildings and other areas
- checking call boxes for proper operation
- check-ins with desk workers at residence halls
- assistance at fire alarms, traffic or parking at special
events, etc.
- general crime prevention
The men and women of the Student Security Team wear distinctive
clothing, identifying them as Student Security and are also
in direct radio contact with the Campus Police Department.
Student Security Officers must be committed to their primary
academic education at Fitchburg State College and maintain
good grades. Student employees must also be responsible,
dependable, and trustworthy. Applicants to Student Security
Officer positions must consent to a background check. Due
to the potential exposure to confidential and sensitive
information and material, Student Security Officers will
be required to sign a confidentiality non-disclosure agreement.
