The
Fitchburg State College Rescue Squad was formed in 1989
by students in response to the need from the college community
for immediate medical intervention in the event of an emergency.
When a medical emergency exists on campus, the FSC Rescue
Squad members rapidly respond along with Campus Police to
the scene with the equipment and training necessary to provide
Basic Life Support. FSC Campus Police Officer Andrew Lamarche and Dispatcher Alan Saball are the college advisor to the squad
which consists of students certified in The First Responder
and American Heart Association CPR and AED. They work closely
with the FSC Campus Police, Health Services, Fitchburg Fire
Department and other community rescue services.
New members will be enrolled in the FSC Rescue Squad Academy
where they will be trained in First Responder, CPR, AED,
and FSC Rescue Squad policies and procedures. Once a student
successfully completes the academy they will be placed on-call
to respond to on campus medical emergencies. As a First
Responder, students are two-thirds of the way to a lifeguard
certification or eligible to run with most volunteer Fire
Rescue units.
