Campus Police

squad car at thompsonFitchburg State College's Campus Police Department traces its origins to July 1, 1948, when the State Legislature authorized a single Watchman position for the campus. The first headquarters consisted of an in-box on the desk of the Assistant to the President.

The Fitchburg State College Police Department located in Russell Towers has grown substantially in the last 54 years with a firm commitment to community service delivery. Now located in the bottom floor of Russell Towers, we are a very different department. With a Chief, Lieutenant, Sergeant, ten Police Officers, two full time Dispatchers, two reserve officers.  The department employs a large number of students as Student Security Officers. The Police Officers are fully trained, licensed, and armed as police officers under Massachusetts General Law c.22c, 63 and c.73,18. Officers possess full police powers and are responsible for the prevention of crime, the detection and apprehension of offenders, the preservation of public peace, and the enforcement of all criminal laws and state statues as well as compliance with the policies and regulations of the college.

With its basic philosophy deeply rooted in service to the college community, the department is committed to maintaining the highest level of community policing. Officers patrol the campus by foot, bicycle, and cruiser 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Campus Police offers a number of proactive services. The Department is responsible for the coordination of parking and shuttle bus service and numerous other services outlined in the website. So please take this opportunity to learn about the Fitchburg State College Police Department and if you have any questions, please call or email.
