The admission process at American International College is a personalized one. While students applying for admission as freshmen are encouraged to apply early in their senior year of high school, because we adhere to a rolling admission policy, we typically accept applications throughout the year. Students will usually receive an admission decision within a few weeks of their application being complete.

Similarly, students applying for transfer admission are urged to complete their application within 30 days of the beginning of the semester for which they intend to enroll. Transfer applicants will also usually receive an admission decision within a few weeks of their application being complete.

Biology students and faculty at Amherst are engaged in studying how living organisms function, develop, reproduce, interact, behave, and evolve.

We offer courses for students with career interests in biology and medicine, and courses for students who are not majoring in science but who wish to study modern biology as part of liberal arts education.

The Biology faculty are active in research, and students participate in that research in several ways, notably through the Senior Honors Program.

We interact and collaborate with other natural science departments at Amherst, particularly Chemistry and Neuroscience. Also, since Amherst is a member of the Five College Consortium, Biology students at Amherst can take advantage of opportunities at the other four institutions. Examples are the Five College Coastal and Marine Sciences Program, based at Smith College, and a Five-College certificate program in Culture, Health and Science.

The Biology Department is housed in a modern Life Sciences Building, completed in 1996, containing state-of-the-art research and teaching facilities.

We offer a Summer Institute in Genomics for high school science teachers.

We are currently seeking to fill a genomic biology postdoctoral research and teaching position.

For more information about our faculty, courses, and other aspects of Biology at Amherst College, please explore our Web site. We welcome your questions and comments.

6.  Program Info

Biology majors at Amherst study introductory Biology, Chemistry, and Physics, and then have a wide choice of upper-level Biology courses to fulfill the major. Many Biology majors choose to do a senior honors research project culminating in a thesis and graduation with departmental honors in Biology.

Amherst graduates who majored in Biology usually go on to graduate or professional school, and have careers in such fields as medicine, research, teaching, or the business world.

The Biology major consists of three categories of courses:

1. Two introductory biology courses (Biology 18 and 19):

Most students begin with Biology 18 in the spring semester of their first year. Biology 19, which is taught in the fall, has a chemistry prerequisite and is not normally available for first-year students. Students may choose to place out of either Biology 18 or Biology 19 by providing the Departmental Chair with written documentation of a Biology advanced placement grade of 5. A student exempted from Biology 18 and/or Biology 19 must substitute an upper-level course for each exemption. Students exempted from Biology 18 must substitute an upper division course from group 3(c) below, whereas students exempted from Biology 19 must substitute an upper division course from group 3(a) below.

2. Four courses in physical sciences and mathematics (Mathematics 11, Chemistry 11 or 15, Chemistry 12, and Physics 16 or 24 or 32).

3. Five additional courses in biology, chosen according to each student's needs and interests, subject to two constraints: First, at least three of the five must be laboratory courses. These courses are Biology 22, 24, 25, 29, 30, 32, 35, and 39. Second, the five courses must include at least one course in each of the three following areas:

(a) Molecular and cellular mechanisms of life processes: Molecular Genetics (Biology 25), Cell Biology (Biology 29), and Biochemistry (Biology 30), or Structural Biology (Biology 37);

(b) Integrative processes that show the relationship between molecular mechanisms and macroscopic phenomena: Developmental Biology (Biology 22), Genetic Analysis of Biological Processes (Biology 24), Animal Physiology (Biology 26), Immunology (Biology 33), and Neurobiology (Biology 35);

(c) Evolutionary explanations of biological phenomena: Ecology (Biology 23), Evolutionary Biology (Biology 32), and Animal Behavior (Biology 39).

Biology majors also take a Senior Comprehensive Examination administered by the Department.

Chemistry 11 and/or Chemistry 12 are requisites for several Biology courses. Students who are well-prepared in sciences are encouraged to begin their Biology major by taking Chemistry 11 or 15 in the fall of their first year. Students preparing for graduate study in life sciences should consider taking Chemistry 21 and 22, Physics 17, and a course in statistics in addition to the minimum requirements for the Biology major. Note that Chemistry 21 and 22 are requisites for Biology 30 and that prior completion of Physics 17 or 33 is a requisite for Biology 35.

Departmental Honors Program. Honors work in Biology is an opportunity to do original laboratory or field research and to write a thesis based on this research. The topic of thesis research is chosen in consultation with a member of the Biology Department who agrees to supervise the Honors work. Candidates for Honors in Biology will also attend the Biology Seminar, at which faculty, students, and visitors discuss current research in the life sciences. Honors candidates take Biology 77 and D78 in addition to the other requirements for the major, except that Honors candidates may take four rather than five courses in addition to Biology 18 and 19, subject to the laboratory and subject area constraints.

Courses for Students in Premedical and Other Health Professions. Students not majoring in Biology may fulfill the two-course premedical requirement in Biology by taking two laboratory courses in Biology. Students interested in health professions other than allopathic medicine should consult a member of the Health Professions Committee regarding specific requirements, and visit the Amherst Health Professions web page.

If you have questions about the Biology major, please e-mail biology@amherst.edu.

      6.    Program Info

Biology is the study of living organisms and their interactions with the environment. It seeks to understand the incredible intricacies of the natural world our God and Creator has designed for us. As such, Biology majors take courses examining both general biological principles, including General Biology, Chemistry, Botany, and Ecology, as well as courses that examine the specific molecular and genetic machinery of our cells, such as Genetics, Cell and Molecular Biology, and Animal Physiology. The job market for natural scientists is constantly expanding. The good news is that employment opportunities in many Biological specialties continually exceed the supply.

Requirements for each degree are described below along with major and cognate requirements. If you are unsure which degree is most suitable for you, please contact an academic advisor in the Department of Natural Science. All Biology majors should consult regularly with their academic advisor regarding the study program and timely completion of degree requirements. All students enrolled in a Natural Science course with a lab will be charged a lab fee.

      7.     Degrees Offered

             The B.S. in Biology is designed to prepare students for graduate studies at the masters and doctoral level leading to careers in basic science, college level teaching, professional careers in biology, such as environmental management and government work, positions in industry, such as research and development, product manufacturing, and quality control, or careers in secondary teaching. In addition, this major covers all the basic requirements for entrance into graduate school and professional programs.

                 The Department has five graduate program areas: Ecology, Behavior and Evolution; Physiology, Endocrinology and Reproduction; Neurobiology; Cell and Molecular Biology; and Marine Biology. Each program area has unique strengths and suggested curricula. The Department offers both master's and doctoral degrees in Biology that emphasize independent research on the part of the student, and a nonresearch master's degree. Many Biology faculty participate in interdepartmental programs that offers graduate degrees in Molecular Biology, Cell Biology and Biochemistry, and in Neuroscience.

The undergraduate program leading to the B.A. degree in Biology combines both a breadth of education and training in Biology and the opportunity to concentrate in one of these areas: Cell and Molecular Biology; Physiology, Endocrinology and Reproduction; Marine Biology; Neurobiology; or Ecology, Behavior and Evolution.

The Biology Department is located at Boston University's Charles River Campus near many of the major historic and cultural attractions of the city. In addition, five department faculty are in residence at the Boston University Marine Program (BUMP) in Woods Hole on Cape Cod, where we offer a PhD, an MA, and an undergraduate specialization in Marine Biology.
