Biology students and faculty at Amherst are engaged in studying how living organisms function, develop, reproduce, interact, behave, and evolve. We offer courses for students with career interests in biology and medicine, and courses for students who are not majoring in science but who wish to study modern biology as part of liberal arts education. The Biology faculty are active in research, and students participate in that research in several ways, notably through the Senior Honors Program. We interact and collaborate with other natural science departments at Amherst, particularly Chemistry and Neuroscience. Also, since Amherst is a member of the Five College Consortium, Biology students at Amherst can take advantage of opportunities at the other four institutions. Examples are the Five College Coastal and Marine Sciences Program, based at Smith College, and a Five-College certificate program in Culture, Health and Science. The Biology Department is housed in a modern Life Sciences Building, completed in 1996, containing state-of-the-art research and teaching facilities. We offer a Summer Institute in Genomics for high school science teachers. We are currently seeking to fill a genomic biology postdoctoral research and teaching position. For more information about our faculty, courses, and other aspects of Biology at Amherst College, please explore our Web site. We welcome your questions and comments.
6. Program Info Biology majors at Amherst study introductory Biology, Chemistry, and Physics, and then have a wide choice of upper-level Biology courses to fulfill the major. Many Biology majors choose to do a senior honors research project culminating in a thesis and graduation with departmental honors in Biology. Amherst graduates who majored in Biology usually go on to graduate or professional school, and have careers in such fields as medicine, research, teaching, or the business world. The Biology major consists of three categories of courses: 1. Two introductory biology courses (Biology 18 and 19): Most students begin with Biology 18 in the spring semester of their first year. Biology 19, which is taught in the fall, has a chemistry prerequisite and is not normally available for first-year students. Students may choose to place out of either Biology 18 or Biology 19 by providing the Departmental Chair with written documentation of a Biology advanced placement grade of 5. A student exempted from Biology 18 and/or Biology 19 must substitute an upper-level course for each exemption. Students exempted from Biology 18 must substitute an upper division course from group 3(c) below, whereas students exempted from Biology 19 must substitute an upper division course from group 3(a) below. 2. Four courses in physical sciences and mathematics (Mathematics 11, Chemistry 11 or 15, Chemistry 12, and Physics 16 or 24 or 32). 3. Five additional courses in biology, chosen according to each student's needs and interests, subject to two constraints: First, at least three of the five must be laboratory courses. These courses are Biology 22, 24, 25, 29, 30, 32, 35, and 39. Second, the five courses must include at least one course in each of the three following areas: (a) Molecular and cellular mechanisms of life processes: Molecular Genetics (Biology 25), Cell Biology (Biology 29), and Biochemistry (Biology 30), or Structural Biology (Biology 37); (b) Integrative processes that show the relationship between molecular mechanisms and macroscopic phenomena: Developmental Biology (Biology 22), Genetic Analysis of Biological Processes (Biology 24), Animal Physiology (Biology 26), Immunology (Biology 33), and Neurobiology (Biology 35); (c) Evolutionary explanations of biological phenomena: Ecology (Biology 23), Evolutionary Biology (Biology 32), and Animal Behavior (Biology 39). Biology majors also take a Senior Comprehensive Examination administered by the Department. Chemistry 11 and/or Chemistry 12 are requisites for several Biology courses. Students who are well-prepared in sciences are encouraged to begin their Biology major by taking Chemistry 11 or 15 in the fall of their first year. Students preparing for graduate study in life sciences should consider taking Chemistry 21 and 22, Physics 17, and a course in statistics in addition to the minimum requirements for the Biology major. Note that Chemistry 21 and 22 are requisites for Biology 30 and that prior completion of Physics 17 or 33 is a requisite for Biology 35. Departmental Honors Program. Honors work in Biology is an opportunity to do original laboratory or field research and to write a thesis based on this research. The topic of thesis research is chosen in consultation with a member of the Biology Department who agrees to supervise the Honors work. Candidates for Honors in Biology will also attend the Biology Seminar, at which faculty, students, and visitors discuss current research in the life sciences. Honors candidates take Biology 77 and D78 in addition to the other requirements for the major, except that Honors candidates may take four rather than five courses in addition to Biology 18 and 19, subject to the laboratory and subject area constraints. Courses for Students in Premedical and Other Health Professions. Students not majoring in Biology may fulfill the two-course premedical requirement in Biology by taking two laboratory courses in Biology. Students interested in health professions other than allopathic medicine should consult a member of the Health Professions Committee regarding specific requirements, and visit the Amherst Health Professions web page. If you have questions about the Biology major, please e-mail biology@amherst.edu.
7. Degrees Offered We offer courses for students with career interests in biology and medicine, and courses for students who are not majoring in science but who wish to study modern biology as part of liberal arts education.

Requirements
for Freshman applicants
There are additional requirements for Transfer applicants, International applicants, and for LD Program (PAL) applicants. Deadlines
Early Decision* - December 1 *The Early Decision admission policy of the College is consistent with the guidelines of the College Entrance Examination Board: Early decision plans are offered only for candidates who are sure of the colleges they will attend if admitted, and whose credentials are such as to make the probability of admission high. Such plans are designed primarily to reduce anxiety for those candidates as early as possible in their senior year; they have the additional advantage of reducing unnecessary multiple applications that otherwise would have to filed by the students, supported by the schools, and considered by the colleges. Curry subscribes to a First Choice Plan, which requires that the candidate certify that the institution to which he/she is applying is his/her first choice and that he/she will accept an offer of admission if it is extended, provided it also includes adequate financial aid if such is needed. A First Choice plan permits the candidate to initiate other applications for admission should this seem advisable, but the candidate must agree to withdraw such applications when notified of acceptance and financial aid, if needed, by his/her first choice college. Deadline for Early Decision is December 1; decisions are mailed on December 15.
6. Program Info Students can earn a minor in biology by taking any 15 credits in biology, at least six of which must be taken at Curry College. Note: Any two science laboratory courses from different science areas may be used in combination to fulfill the CLAC I science requirement. * These courses are offered every other year and students should consider this when scheduling. Students interested in pre-med should consult with the biology faculty. The general requirements as determined by the Association of American Medical Colleges are: one year of biology, two years of chemistry through organic chemistry, one year of physics and an earned GPA of at least 3.4. 6. Program Info Biology is the study of life. It is a truly integrative discipline that encompasses topics ranging from molecules and cells to organs, organisms and ecosystems. The Biological Sciences Department at Mount Holyoke College offers students courses spanning this entire range. Students can study molecular, cellular and developmental biology, immunology, microbiology, genetics, anatomy, neurobiology, physiology, biomechanics, animal behavior, evolution and ecology. In addition, students can also explore other biology-related interests through one of our affiliated programs such as Neuroscience and Behavior or Biochemistry.
The program we offer for majors is general enough to provide a basis for continuing studies and intellectual growth. Students may wish to elect courses that provide competence in a variety of areas. On the other hand, a concentration in one or two areas is invaluable for more intensive study and original work and provides the only means for achieving the satisfaction that comes from thorough scholarship.

Students in our Master of Science in Biology and Marine Biology programs enjoy strongly individualized guidance in areas allied to the research interests of the faculty. Recent graduate student projects have been in fields such as molecular ecology, plankton ecology, harmful algal blooms, environmental microbiology, gene transcription, aquaculture, marine mammal biology, marine bioinvasions, biofouling, parasites of marine fishes, diatom morphometrics, and fisheries biology. Some projects have involved collaborative research with the National Marine Fisheries Service, Department of Fisheries and Oceans Canada, the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, the UMass Cranberry Experiment Station, and the Mystic and New England Aquarium.
