Call for Nominations:
The Alumni Association requests nominations for awards by November 1 of each year. Unless otherwise noted, documentation required for nomination is a profile, resume or short biography and two letters of recommendation along with supporting material addressing the specific reasons for nomination. We know we have many wonderful and successful alumni...help us recognize
their accomplishments and talents by nominating a friend or colleague. Self-nominations are not accepted.
ALUMNI ACHIEVEMENT AWARD
Recognizes a graduate of Fitchburg Normal School,
Fitchburg Teachers College, Fitchburg State Teachers College, or
Fitchburg State College
who has made a significant contribution
in his/her field which has been an inspiration or of benefit to
others or who has made an extraordinary contribution to his/her
community, region or state through his/her chosen field. A wall
plaque with names of recipients will be displayed in the Alumni
Rooms.
Criteria:
- The nominee must have graduated at least 25 years before the nomination year (award can
be given posthumously).
- Individual may not nominate him/herself.
- Nominations including documentation must be submitted to the
Alumni Office in written form no later than November 1.
ALUMNI LEADERSHIP AWARD
This award honors personal achievement, professional contributions,
and leadership qualities. The award consists of a citation and cash
prize of approximately $1,000.
Criteria:
- The candidate must be nominated by an alumnus/a, faculty member or community member.
- Individual may not nominate him/herself.
- The nominee must have graduated from Fitchburg State College within 15 years
of the nomination year.
ALUMNI RECOGNITION AWARD
This award honors high achievement of alumni in their chosen field. Alumni
from all professions are eligible.
ALUMNI SERVICE AWARD
Presented to volunteers of the Alumni Association who have given
valuable service to the organization and its members, the award
recognizes those people who have taken a special interest in the
association and have worked hard for its benefit.
BOOSTER AWARD
This award recognizes an "unsung hero" whose behind-the-scenes work benefits
the Association and its members. Alumni or friends of the Association
are eligible for this award.
VINCENT J. MARA EXCELLENCE IN TEACHING AWARD
This award, established in 1989 to honor former president Vincent J. Mara, recognizes excellence in college teaching. All full-time, tenured members of the Fitchburg State College faculty are eligible to receive the $2,500 award presented at Commencement. The selection committee consists predominantly of past Mara awardees and selected members of the Alumni Association. Nominations should be in the form of a letter addressed to the VJM Award Committee, c/o the Alumni Office. Nominees will be notified by the Alumni Office as to the process for submitting material.
ALUMNI MILLER AWARD
Joel D. Miller served as a
state senator and member of the State Board of Education, and is
considered one of the three founders of the State Normal School
in Fitchburg. In 1903, he was honored with the name of one of the
college's first dormitories, Miller Hall. Established in 1955, this award is presented to an alumnus/a who is recognized as an outstanding teacher.
Criteria:
- The nominee must be a graduate of Fitchburg State College who graduated or terminated their studies at least 10 years
prior to the nomination year.
- The nominee must be actively engaged in teaching.
- The nominee must have given unselfish devotion to his/her profession and exerted an influence for good among his/her students.
- The nominee must have demonstrated originality in his/her work.
Documentation:
(Please submit 3 copies of the entire nominating package)
- Three letters of support including testimony from current
or former students.
- A profile, resume or short biography, along with supporting
material addressing the specific reasons for nomination.
ATHLETIC HALL OF FAME
The Hall of Fame recognizes the efforts and achievements of the
many outstanding alumni who were student-athletes at Fitchburg State College,
as well as other individuals who have made outstanding contributions
to the Fitchburg State athletic program. Nominations may be submitted online by clicking here.
Criteria:
Student-Athletes:
- Must have participated on an intercollegiate team for
a minimum of two years.
- Must have represented Fitchburg State in a positive manner
both as an undergraduate and as an alumnus/a.
- Must have graduated from Fitchburg State at
least five years prior to the nomination year.
- Must have exhibited athletic
prowness, as determined by playing ability, character, leadership, contribution
to the team or teams on which he/she played, and to Fitchburg State
College in general.
Contributor:
- Must have demonstrated a special and/or sustained interest
in Fitchburg State College and its athletic program. (Current coaches at Fitchburg State College will
not be considered for induction if the primary rationale for consideration is their coaching accomplishments.)
