What is ALFA?
ALFA stands for Adult Learning in the Fitchburg Area. Originally begun as a program for local seniors, ALFA has since expanded to include participants from over fifteen surrounding communities.
ALFA is a Lifelong Learning Institute that offers non-credit daytime courses and special activities - designed and implemented by the members of ALFA in coordination with the professional staff at Fitchburg State College.
ALFA's Mission
ALFA provides an opportunity for lifelong learners with similar interests to meet in an informal setting and pursue learning for enrichment and personal growth.
ALFA is sponsored by the Center for Professional Studies and the Office of Graduate and Continuing Education at Fitchburg State College, in collaboration with volunteer representatives of the community. Classes generally will be held in the C-wing of the McKay Campus School located at 67 Rindge Road.

A Brief History
The concept for an adult learning program began in 2003, when two neighbors, Shirley Pick and Dr. Philip Fallon, former superintendent of the Fitchburg Public Schools, met to discuss the feasibility of establishing a local, adult education program. With the support and encouragement of the new President of Fitchburg State College, Dr. Robert Antonucci, and the Associate Vice President of Academic Affairs, Dr. Shirley Wagner, a steering committee was formed, and two pilot classes began in the spring of 2004.
Now, five years later, ALFA serves 17 communities, offers 25 classes each semester, and has a growing enrollment. In addition, ALFA has initiated a twice-yearly newsletter, ALFA-BITS, a Food for Thought speaker series, and a May ALFA Plus program. Trips to area museums and to Boston Symphony Hall have been among the special event highlights.
