Computers are everywhere, and the demand for people who can program them, design them, and, most of all, have the skills to understand them, continues to grow stronger every year. Through Fitchburg State's Computer Science program, students can take advantage of one of the few programs in the country that combines hardware and software education. This dual-track program gives students the platform that they need to work in such areas as software design, network development, Web page design and computer hardware creation. All of these applications are supported by the knowledge gained by having a strong background in mathematics.

Four-Year Undergraduate Program

Students in the Computer Science will have opportunities to develop knowledge and skills in analysis and design of business information systems, database development, software development, and networking. This program prepares the students for professional careers in the rapidly changing field of computer information systems.

Facilities

The Computer Science Department has its own facilities, including a variety of networked hardware and software labs on campus. Computer students have full access to the Montachusett Economic Center, Small Business Assistance Center, Community Outreach Center and the Business Laboratory.

The college also has a state-of-the-art fiber optic system that provides each classroom, lab and residence hall with access to the Internet, advanced phone service and cable television. Media classrooms located around the campus allow faculty to present materials using state-of-the-art technology. In addition to the computer labs available on campus, a bank of computers in the Commuter Cafe gives us our own campus cyber cafe.

These facilities, coupled with the dynamic and energetic teaching available from the faculty, provide the necessary resources for an exceptional education.

Many members of the faculty hold doctoral degrees, and many have been recognized for their expertise in a variety of areas such as system programming, networking, data communication, and algorithms. The faculty are also known for their active involvement in advancing the technological capabilities on campus.

Students enrolled in our Computer Science and Computer Information Systems Program benefit by taking courses taught by our Math and Business Administration faculty. Faculty from all three departments team up to offer dynamic instruction in workplace applications, as well as in group projects. They are all recognized for their teaching excellence and involvement with professional organizations.
