Academic Departments
Fitchburg State College has 14 academic departments featuring more than 30 undergraduate programs and 22 graduate programs. Our goal is to integrate high-quality professional programs with strong liberal arts and sciences studies to develop well-rounded students. Each department stresses the highest standards of academic, professional, and societal performance.
Behavioral Sciences
The Behavioral Sciences Department offers students the education and experience in one of the most fascinating fields of study that looks at who we are, what we do and why. The Behavioral Sciences explore fundamental issues regarding the experiences of individuals in society through a range of majors and minors; students gain the academic background and research capabilities for both graduate study and immediate entry into a variety of career fields.
Biology/Chemistry
The Department of Biology and Chemistry has a rich history of producing successful graduates in secondary education, biotechnology, environmental science and exercise science. Our science faculty foster a supportive teaching and learning environment, offer individual attention to students, and provide numerous undergraduate and graduate research opportunities.
Business Administration
Students who study within the Business Administration Department are prepared to take a responsible position within the world of business, equipped with a knowledge of business theories, policies, and procedures.
Communications Media
The Communications Media Department fosters the development of skills critical to adapting to an ever changing technological and knowledge-based society. Students are prepared to assume communication positions as freelancers, independent producers, employees of corporations, institutions or media organizations, as well as a continuation in graduate level study.
Computer Science
Through the Computer Science Department, students can take advantage of one of the few programs in the country that combines hardware and software education. This dual-track program gives students the platform that they need to work in such areas as software design, network development, Web page design and computer hardware creation.
Economics, History, and Political Science
Students in this department are offered a choice of three academically distinct but interrelated majors - economics, history, and political science - and a range of associated minors. Focused field training experiences and national-internationally focused extra-curricular initiatives enhance what is learned in the classroom and broaden students' career options.
Education Department *
If you're interested in becoming a teacher, the Education Department has the programs you'll need. We offer a wide variety of teacher education programs, including early childhood, elementary, middle school and special education.

English/Speech/Theater
The English Department offers programs in literature, teacher education, theater and professional writing. The English major provides a solid foundation for a number of careers that value critical thinking and writing and the articulate, well-read person.
Exercise and Sport Science
The Exercise and Sport Science Department provides students with the training they'll need to pursue a career in an industry that offers a multitude of choices. Students majoring in Exercise and Sport Science choose one of two concentrations: clinical exercise physiology or fitness management.
Geo/Physical Sciences
The Geo/Physical Sciences Department encompasses the disciplines of geography, earth science and physics. The mission of the department is defined by its dedicated concern for the preparation of students who are knowledgeable in their chosen academic concentration and who are confident in their abilities to succeed in whatever career-related objectives they may choose to pursue.
Humanities
The Humanities Department allows students to combine their studies in music, art, philosophy, foreign languages, history, and literature into a unique program that reflects their own academic interests. Students can pursue a bachelor of arts or bachelor of science in one of three tracks - traditional, language or creative arts.
Industrial Technology
Students who join the Industrial Technology Department can create a program of study that will prepare them for a number of careers in the real world. Students in the department can concentrate in architectural technology, construction technology, electronics engineering technology, energy engineering technology, facilities management, manufacturing engineering technology or Technical Theater, or create an interdisciplinary major by sharing coursework with the Education Department.
Mathematics
Mathematics Department students are engaged in activities ranging from theoretical discoveries to precise translations of scientific and managerial problems. Mathematics is the preferred major of many prestigious law schools and business schools.
Nursing
As the first public college in Massachusetts to offer a nursing program, Fitchburg State has a long distinguished history in nursing education. The Nursing Department offers one of only two Master of Nursing programs in the country with a focus in forensic nursing.
Pre-Major (Undeclared)
Focus on the Future is a program that enables undeclared or pre-major students to make an informed decision about their major and career path by providing opportunities to actively explore their options and to assess their interests, values and skills.
